Challenge:

As the City Beach Fountains at Southend-on-Sea are close to the seafront it was expected that there would be considerable interaction with children using the feature straight from the beach. Water quality was therefore deemed to be of paramount importance. Ustigate’s challenge was to design, supply, and install a robust recirculation system to cope with the challenging environment and the many visitors to the beach.

Due to the high ground water level and costs associated with extensive excavations Ustigate utilised the existing underground w/c’s to accommodate the plant room featuring the two reservoir tanks and  water treatment system.

Success:

Ustigate carried out exhaustive mock up and testing to achieve the most effective water delivery and lighting system. The City Beach Fountains plaza water feature at Southend-on-Sea has sixty-four jets, sequenced in groups of eight to provide a coordinated rise and fall display mimicking the waves. The LED colour changing lighting links the feature to the nearby amusement arcades and the new street lighting scheme. Although a formal feature in style the colourful water jets deliver entertainment and an element of fun to the seafront. Clean filtered water is consistently fed to the water feature via a robust PWTAG compliant dual tank  filtration system, allowing families and children to interact safely at all times.

In 2022 Ustigate were delighted to return to Southend-on-Sea to upgrade the City Beach Fountains. Our scope of works included the synchronization of Southend-on-Sea’s dancing waters and LEDs with the promenade masts. In 2022 Southend-on-Sea City Council selected the colours blue and yellow for their plaza water feature and promenade masts to symbolise their empathy with the people of Ukraine.
